A long bay stretching approximately 40 km north to south from Fanad Head (see), Lough Swilly is located in the north of County Donegal. At its southern end lies the town of Letterkenny. The fjord allows ships to reach the port of Buncrana, which is also home to a life boat station. Numerous remains bear witness to the region's turbulent history, such as the Martello Tower at Macamish on the south shore and the stone fort of Grianán of Aileach (see) on the hills to the east. At low tide, long sandy beaches appear, offering many opportunities for activities, including horse riding. |
