Located off the north-west coast of County Donegal, between Arramore Island (see) to the south and Gola Island (see) to the north, Owey is a small island with a population of around 30. A century ago, the island was more lively, with nearly 150 inhabitants, a school and a post office. Many buildings are now abandoned and bear witness to this past life. The island has no electricity or water, and there is no regular boat service connecting it to the mainland. This context gives Owey Island a wild character. The summit rises 102 metres above sea level and much of the coastline consists of cliffs with numerous outcrops, arches and sea caves.

Située près des côtes au nord-ouest du Donegal, entre les îles d'Arramore (voir) au sud et de Gola (voir) au nord, Owey est une petite île où vivent une trentaine de personnes. Avec près de 150 habitants il y a un siècle, l'île était bien plus animée à cette époque avec une école et un bureau de poste. De nombreux bâtiments sont abandonnés et témoignent de cette vie passée. L'île ne dispose ni de l'électricité ni de l'eau courante et il n'y a pas de liaison régulière en bateau pour rejoindre l'île depuis la côte. Ce contexte confère à l'île d'Owey un caractère sauvage. Le sommet culmine à 102 mètres d'altitude et une bonne partie du rivage est composé de falaises avec de nombreux affleurements, arches et grottes marines.
