At the mercy of the wind and the paths of Gartan
In the early morning, a thick fog enveloped the hills surrounding Lake Gartan, but soon a south-westerly wind cleared the mist, giving way once again to a glorious Irish day. In the main classroom of the Gartan activity centre, John and Marty welcomed the team of trainee instructors from CREPS for a presentation on the centre and the Donegal region, which is ideal for all kinds of outdoor activities. Particular emphasis was placed on the training programme run at the centre for future outdoor educators, a 47-week course featuring a range of activities including kayaking and sailing. It was precisely this last activity that the Ardéchois were invited to try out on the lake this morning. Thanks to the invaluable advice provided by Barry and Ray, the centre’s instructors, our landlubbers didn’t do too badly, despite a few acrobatic capsizes when a few gusts of wind blew through. In the afternoon, the team returned to dry land and swapped sails for mountain bikes on a route of around 30 km to Glenveagh Lake, in the heart of a national park featuring a castle surrounded by a remarkable botanical garden. Intense yet rich in the exchange of professional practices, the day allowed us to discover an exceptional natural heritage whilst proving particularly instructive on both a personal and professional level.
