Erasmus + CREPS / Gartan – Jour 3 - Kayak de mer et vélo vers et autour de l’île d’Arramore
Avec un décalage vers l’est, une petite perturbation s’est invitée sur le Donegal mais de manière beaucoup moins invasive que la météo ne l’annonçait. Après quelques ondées passagères et un petit crapahut matinal sur les hauteurs de la colline de Farscallop, près de Bridle Pass, les moniteurs stagiaires du CREPS partaient cette fois avec John et Brona, instructeurs de Gartan, ainsi qu’avec Luc, stagiaire en cours de formation, vers Burton Port. De là, chacun embarquait à bord d’un kayak de mer pour une traversée jusqu’à l’île d’Arranmore située à quelques encablures de la côte. Par un cheminement au travers des rochers à marée basse, d’où émergeait furtivement le museau de quelques phoques curieux, la flottille rejoignait l’île après avoir franchi un petit clapot à travers de détroit de Rutland. A Leabgarrow, sur Arranmore, l’équipe abandonnait momentanément les kayaks pour partir à vélo à la découverte de l’ile jusqu’à la pointe du phare avec ses falaises remarquables. Cette double activité au sein d’une même sortie constitue l’une des mises en pratique de la formation outdoor de Gartan et les ardéchois purent ainsi apprécier cette découverte multiple tout en mesurant le travail et la logistique préalables à une telle organisation.

Day 3 – Sea kayaking and cycling to and around Arramore Island
With a shift towards the east, a small weather system moved into Donegal, though it was far less disruptive than the forecast had suggested. After a few passing showers and a short morning hike up Farscallop Hill, near Bridle Pass, the CREPS trainee instructors set off this time with John and Brona, instructors from Gartan, as well as Luc, a trainee currently undergoing training, towards Burton Port. From there, everyone boarded a sea kayak for a crossing to the island of Arranmore, situated a few miles throw from the coast. Making their way through the rocks at low tide, from which the snouts of a few curious seals peeped out, the fleet reached the island after navigating a slight swell across Rutland Sound. At Leabgarrow, on Arranmore, the team temporarily left their kayaks behind to set off on bikes to explore the island as far as the light house headland with its remarkable cliffs. This combination of activities within a single outing is one of the practical elements of the Gartan outdoor training programme, and the group from the Ardèche were thus able to enjoy this multifaceted exploration whilst appreciating the work and logistics required to organise such a course.
